GREAT, INEXPENSIVE MFC 11X17 IN ALL FUNCTIONS
Date:May 2, 2012

I have an hp 7000 13x19 printer, but needed an 11x17 scanner-copier. The HP 11x17 all in 1 does not scan-copy 11x17, but the Brother mfc-j6710dw does 11x17 in all functions. The hp 7000 may have "slightly" better color quality if you want high quality large photo prints, but again it's only a printer. The color quality of the 6710 is fine for alll other aplications. I now use the 6710 for almost everything. One thing to keep in mind is the low cost. Setup was easy and the speed is better than most inkjets I have used. Some users say that the 6710 is large & bulky. "DUH" it's an 11x17 all in 1, with two 11x17, 250 sheet paper trays. Some say the paper trays are flimsly & dificult, but you are loading 250 sheets into a precision machine, not throwing them in a trash can. I use all functions (except fax) and they work flawlessly. I produce 24x36 engineering drawings and use the 6710 to print half size proof prints. The prints are clear, with fine lines & legable. The xxlarge ink carts are easily replacable, reducing ink cost & changing time. For a lot more money, you may get a better machine, but for the cost/service ratio, I beleive this MFC (or other Brother 11x17 mfc's) are the best deals available.

I am in LOVE with my printer.

From the minute I set up my Brother printer and looked at a test page one of my programs printed out I knew I was in LOVE with my printer. The colors were so true and proper I couldn't believe my eyes. I started to print other things just to marvel at the quality of the print. No matter what the print job, it has preformed with flying COLORS. PUN intended. Large or small each time I print something I seem to challenge the printer in one way or another and it always comes through. I've printed everything from pictures of flowers to letters to friends with pictures embedded in the letters to graphs of data. Each time the printer has preformed perfectly. Even when it run low on ink. It told me in no uncertain terms. I went to the troubleshooting guide (online) and found this wonderful step by step instruction sheet on not only how to replace the ink cartridges but a full range of other user friendly maintenance tips. This speaks well not only for the printer but for Brother as well. As my printer is an "all in one", I have used it to scan and copy as well. It performs both of those functions just as well as it prints. It enlarges and reduces in size a picture with such clarity I can't describe it other than to say it is beautiful. As I said in the beginning I AM IN LOVE WITH MY PRINTER.

love the 11x17 scanner/printer

I had some problems getting this set up as I don't have the wireless connection. Spent time with on line technical help, who were knowledgeable. Once it was set up, it is great. Love the 11x17 scanner and printer. The slot in the back for manual feed is a great idea but I cannot get the paper to print straight from there yet. I love Brother printers/ this is my third one over 10 years. I use them a LOT in my home office. Really like having the two paper trays for different size paper. The ink lasts a long time, the color printing is good, although I mostly use black and white.

Good value for money.

I got this because my 8 1/2 x 11 scanner died. I chose 11x17 because I frequently deal with sheet music and there is nothing between 8 1/2 x 14 and 11 x 17.
Scan quality appears to be good. It reproduces manuscript and printed music well. It also reproduced graphic output from an analytical machine well.
Print quality is not quite as nice as my HP Deskjet 7xx, but not bad. Maybe tweaking print settings would help. The printing instructions for double-sided are fuzzy; a little time with the machine will help make it work better, I'm sure.
Copying is a combination of scanning and printing. It was able to copy and reprint 11x17 sheets with no problems. Trying to copy slightly oversize music using the "Print to Fit" option resulted in printing that was too small, but with a dialed in reproduction ratio it worked OK. I didn't try to copy single sheets to make a double-sided 11x17; looks like it might be cumbersome.
The black cartridge supplied with the machine did not last very long.
Considering the price, it's really got good capabilities. To do everything I want would cost 10x as much and weigh 10x as much. Great home office all-in-one.

Solid, dependable product. The auto select for paper size on this machine actually works which for me is critical as I use both letter and legal paper on a daily basis, glad the paper waste and babysitting is over. Copies at a much faster speed than my old bother MFC. One area of improvement could be ensuring only 1 piece of paper is pulled from paper tray at a time, sometimes multiples are pulled resulting in doc being copied over more than one piece of paper.

So Far So Good
Date:April 14, 2011

I purchased this machine for business use (structural drawings) as I need the ability to print/scan 11x17. I've read a few reviews, some good some not so. I found network setup easy, just need to know your network info..name/password. I'm no IT pro but using the manual and a bit of common sense did just fine for me. Only problem I had was loading the initial black ink cart...had to reload 5 times b4 it took. Black print seems fine to me (have read otherwise). Have printed a bit of color but no pics. Color seems to be good on plain paper for my needs. The scanner, which I use from the controller computer program provided, for my check prints is excellent...yes you do need to be sure you are using the correct paper size/tray and change setting accordingly ea. time you change paper sizes but for under $300 I am not complaining. 11x17 print/scan is priceless...scans are one step, seamless and simple. I've read a few complaints about size???? 11x17 is going to be large but the overall dim's are acceptable, don't know how Brother could make it much smaller. I have not used many of the features yet...they almost seem endless but for my purposes I am very pleased.

A good printer with the same old problems
Date:March 21, 2012
By Jalida

To begin with, this printer really is a great printer for how I use it. I mainly print documents and for that when printing on the highest settings the documents black text is crisp and sharp.
The 2 pictures that I printed with this printer when printed on photo quality paper look like they came from a professional printing service.
The (what I consider a huge) problem with this printer is the same as all the other Brother printers that I've owned over the years, it gobbles down ink even when you are not printing. What I mean by that is that I printed 2 color images, which took little to no colored ink. However after the amount of times that this printer cleans the print heads, I am out of colored ink, even though I've only ever printed 2 color images and ALL my documents are printed with only black.
At the price of ink today, it's often cheaper to go buy a disposable printer and buy it again when the ink runs out. The amount of ink that this printer uses just to clean the print heads is out of control. And since the printer won't even print with just black when the color cartridges are empty, they basically force you to buy more colored ink to be able to use this printer when just printing black.
Again, I printed 2 color pictures, the rest of my documents are always set to black ink only, and yet in the amount of time it takes to replace 3 or 4 black XL cartridges, the colored ink is exhausted due to only the printer cleaning the print heads, which is ridiculous procedure and should be fixed.
Other than the extensive use of colored ink when not even printing in color, the printer is a really nice printer and the fax portions works great, I've yet had a problem connecting to any other fax machines with this Brother all in one printer.
The scanner is also well done and very fast. Overall the features built into this unit are superb.
It's only real downfall to me is how it can use full cartridges of color ink when I'm not even printing color pages, and the absurd price of the Brother ink.

Disappointed
Date:June 3, 2013

For all the research I did prior to purchasing my MFC-J6710DW I was very disappointed with the product. Once the lengthy set-up was finished all the machine would do is constantly cycle through cleaning until the ink ran out - and that's A LOT of cycles. I returned product hoping it was just that machine. On machine #2 I was initially hopeful, wireless worked ok and everything printed fine. Then after a couple weeks constant cleaning cycles returned. Uninstalled, reinstalled, USB, wireless, nothing worked. Then, even the occasional test print page stopped printing black, even though the cartridge had lots of ink. Next my Windows 7 "View Devices and Printers" started showing multiple printer icons! Ugh... The on-line support was valiant in their efforts to assist me but machine #2 goes back tonight. Sorry, Brother, time to try somethnig else.

It's A Champ!
Date:September 30, 2011

I originally purchased the MFC-J6710DW for one reason: the large format scanner. It replaced a Brother MFC-295CN (about as basic an all-in-one as you can get, and another winner! I loved that printer!) that was fully satisfactory, but for the small (standard) scanner format. I sell vintage sheet music folios, and even the smaller ones were too large for the standard scanner bed, so I was jumping through hoops (digital pictures to imaging software, with a barely-acceptable result) to create the product images (images sell!). With the MFC-J6710DW, great image scans of over-sized items is a snap, and there is no longer a need for significant image editing because the scanned images are true to color/brightness/contrast. All I have to do is crop, maybe sharpen, and the images are done, and they are SUPERIOR! Printing is reasonably prompt; faxing works fine; copying is a breeze. The only thing I don't like about this printer is the dual paper trays (I just don't need two trays for my printing needs), which makes the printer very tall. But that's on me for choosing the MFC-J6710DW instead of its one-tray sibling (which still has the large format scanner), and it's not a negative of the printer itself. I would say that this is a fairly large printer (width, depth, height) and if you're considering purchasing it for a small/home office with low printing volume needs, you really need to take the size into consideration. As my business grows, however, I may find that the dual paper trays are a bonus! Additionally, I'll add that, prior to purchasing the MFC-6710DW, I shopped and priced a whole lot of printers (and standalone scanners) which included the large-format scanner bed. There was NOTHING out there (that had decent user/owner reviews) for less than $900--and $1500 was more typical. I already knew and trusted the Brother brand, and the price was, by comparison, phenomenal! I love this printer/scanner/all-in-one!

Hard to set up Wireless

This is the first Brother All in One printer I have owned. Our last printer was hit by lighening so we thought we would try out the Brother. Setting up the wireless was so complicated, I had to Staples to come and set it up, They struggled for 2 days to get it into our wireless network. Then we changed our Wireless router and the Printer refuses to print unless we go through imputing each computer again (hard wiring them) and entering them one by one. This is the most tedious, unnecessary and hard to follow instructions, just to get your printer to remember your PC or laptop. I not a geek, but the Staples employee was. I have computer back ground, so I am not un-knowledgeable. But all these steps and continued problems is not worth the product. Plus it runs through ink at an accelerated rate. My advice, make it simple.

I specifically bought this printer because it is the only printer in its price range and size (compact enough for home use) that will print and scan 11" X 17" documents. I use it for music parts and it enables me to make 8.5" X 11" two page parts without a taped seam----I just print the two pages onto a single 11" X 17" page. It works very well and I commend Brother for making a printer of this type available for home use.

Nice All-In-One Printer
Date:November 10, 2012

I bought this MFC-J6710DW because I wanted the large format paper handling (11"x17") and the auto-duplexing feature. Haven't used the fax features, don't really need them.
Pros: -menus are easy to follow -wireless works well -two seperate paper trays -large photocopying surface (up to 13"x19") -decent print speeds -auto duplex -nice software features
Cons: -It's huge! -paper tray system is awkard when adding paper -to use envelopes you have to remove all paper and reset sliding arms to letter size. -goes through ink pretty quickly -has had a few paper jams -scanner resolution is only 1200dpi max
Overall, I am satisfied with this printer and it has been working well. I'll be trying to use the larger capacity ink cartridges LC79, to see if I can get better ink life. My yellow cartridge is nearly empty after printing about 150 pages with mixed text and graphics, plus about 15 photos. The other color cartridges are down to around 30% level. The black cartridge is at about 45%. These were the cartridges that came with the printer which are the low capacity type LC75.

Problems
Date:August 27, 2012
By BrotherPrinter
from Wiliamsburg, MI
The printer is very large and takes up the space on my computer table that normally is occupied by my laptop.
The setup is quite complicated, but the printing/copying has good quality.
The paper tray setup is more complicated than it needs to be. After printing, the printer displays "Please Wait" while it is busily doing something. If you are copying things manually (without using the sheet feeder), this really increases the time spent.
The software for the Brother is not as good as my Kodak 7200 series printer. This is very apparent when scanning. Kodak is self-explanatory and easy; the Brother is complicated.

The 11x17 flat bed plate was the reason for purchasing this machine and expectd quality and speed. I am really disappointed with the very very slow (45 seconds between sheets) copying, slow printing, and slow scanning process along with the poor printing quality no matter what settings I use. Single sheet feed for copying is another problem. No multisheet copy capabilities. This machine is not recommended for small businesses or for anyone using the machine for graphics and CADD drawings or renderings.

This has been an excellent purchase for me. I bought this on the recommendation of a rep at an office supply store, and am glad that I followed his advice. It was easy to set up, and is easy to use. I haven't used the fax function yet, but am satisfied with the printing capabilities (although to be sure, it's not a laser printer), especially being able to print color 11 x 17. The scanner has also yielded surprisingly good scans. I would highly recommend this printer for a small office. The price is very reasonable for its capabilities.

I previously had the MFC-6490CW and when it had printing problems we replaced it with this printer. I really liked my old printer and this one is similar but it also prints double-sided. Which is a big plus! The other selling point was that the printer can print on paper up to 11 x 17".

Very Nice Printer

I've been using it for a week now, and I love it. I've used it for just about everything except FAX, including scanning and printing 11x17. Easy to set up. Easy and intuitive to use. Fast. Good control center software, good onboard display and controls. I have experience with a LOT of printers, ever since my first computer in 1979, and so far this is one of the best. Time will tell, though.
The bottom line for me is that I can't believe I got such a capable printer for so little money.
The weaknesses so far are minor: Poor or nonexistent instructions for the software (but it was fairly intuitive for me, a highly experienced user of new printers and scanners). Flimsy paper output tray (but that seems to be the norm these days). Rather long wait for first page when printing in reverse order (almost 2 minutes when doing a 12-page Word document). And the biggest one... colors, though fairly true-to-life, are generally not very intense. The only time I've gotten intense colors is when copying a photo onto glossy photo paper.
