A Good Value....once it's installed
Date:May 2, 2013

I am not a very technical person. I purchased the Brother-J4510DW at a national office supply store, including their package which provided free installation on our two laptops. I have 2 Brother sewing machines which are real workhorses. Therefore, I had no doubts about quality of the machine.
The printer worked just fine first time. Quality of the print on normal was about equal to what I had as draft on a competitors printer. But I can get a lot more pages with this one. Day 2 I scanned an item to file. This worked fine. Went to print something, but it wouldn't print. Called tech support as I didn't understand the online instructions. I had to create a new port....way beyond my technical ability. But the support person walked me through it step by step. I was able to print. Day 4 I needed to scan to file, but now the scanner didn't work. Again, I called tech support. Again I needed to add a new port.
I was able then on my own to make the changes to the second computer. Both are working fine and I've had no additional issues.
I would consider this a good value for the money providing you have some technical background and can add these ports. It was easy enough once you've done it. I thought the ink was rather expensive, but I also get a lot more pages. As yet, I have not used all of the starter cartridges and I've had it a month.

Wireless Printer
Date:October 27, 2012
By NickG
My first wireless printer, and it works quite well in fact. I can print from Macbook Pros, and i Pads. The only problem I've thus far encountered is that I can't seem to use the printer from an i Mac located upstairs. The computer 'sees' the printer as a 'nearby device', but I get an error message saying that 'computer is unable to locate software for this printer. Contact manufacturer for latest software'. I find this a bit strange in that the software disk that came with the printer, only had to be installed on a single laptop, then all devices were able to print (except this iMac). Guess I'll have to call Brother to see if they have any ideas.

Small Package...Big Results
Date:November 26, 2012

We, like many households seem to go through a new printer every few years. We have tried most of the brands out there and end up with either technology no longer supported, or repairs after warranty that don't justify the cost of the repair. We decided to try the new BrotherMFC-J451ODW for 2 reasons: very small size and very nice price. A bonus was the cost of the ink cartridges - they are WAY less than other brands on the market...big plus! This printer was very easy to set up and so far it has performed well. Ink cartridges are very accessible and packaged in kind of an ingenious way so they don't dry out while waiting to be purchased. The quality of printed page is good; scanning is easy and copying is just pushing a button. There are additional menu options for scanning and copying so you can set B&W, Color, resolution, etc. My husband and I would recommend this printer to anyone looking for a nice home printer that won't break the bank and has cost effective ink cartridges.

Very poor paper feeding
Date:April 24, 2013
By Innkeeper
from New Hampshire
The machine prints very well. Good quality and it fits nicely on the table top without all the appendages one finds on so many printers. That said, the Brother J451ODW - or our particular unit - has the worst paper feeding capabilities of any printer we've used in - well - ever. It is a constant stop and go to print more than one copy without jams or double feeding of paper sheets. This is particularly burdensome when trying to print checks. Sadly, it will need to be returned.

Worst printer ever!!! Paper jams!!!!!
Date:February 7, 2013
By prbarr
I bought for the small footprint, but there is a major design flaw with this printer -- the paper jams 99 times out of 100... and then once I got the paper working again, it would print with no ink... that's right, a blank piece of paper would shoot out. Then after using the Clean function, it finally printed... so it was fixed, right? NO. Next print... jam.
PIECE OF JUNK! I normally buy Brother over HP because others I have work great and usually a better overall value, but this one has to be returned.

this is a GREAT muti-function printer. Easy to use & easy to install. Good scanner & printer - don't use fax very much. I have bought another one as well. Only negative is that its loud when it prints - but I HIGHLY recommend it.

Compact & Fast
Date:December 13, 2012
By SunnyDay
from San Jose, CA
I wanted a printer/copier that was fairly compact, had a document feeder, and would handle ledger sized paper (11" x 17"). This machine fits the bill perfectly and a bonus is that it is very fast. You do have to feed the larger size paper (ledger & legal) one sheet at a time but I don't mind because it's easy to do. The print quality is excellent and the double-sided prints are perfect. I don't know about ink consumption since I'm still using the inks that came with the printer. Also, it is one of the few printers on the market with an outside case that is not completely black. It looks much better in my light yellow/white craft room. There is only one thing I don't like and it's the reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars. When the printer pulls paper from the tray, it is VERY loud. My chihuahua's bed used to be near the printer but no longer. Every time I printed something, it scared her and she bolted from the room. Now her bed is on the other side of the room. She doesn't leave her bed when I print but she's still nervous. It might not bother larger, less high-strung dogs. All in all, it's a very nice printer.

IT WORKS!

We have been using a Brother laser wireless printer for over a year. But, we were unable to print from our iPhone or iPad. We bit the bullet and bought this MFC-J4510DW printer. Unfortunately, the disc in the box didn't have the newest info to install the printer on our wireless system. But 2 hours of Customer Support via phone (mostly due to my ineptness) installed it and it works like a charm. Hope we continue to enjoy this printer for many years to come...

I like it very much. but I'm finding it hard to get the ink needed. Seems officemax and officedepot do not have the ink for this printer at this time. I wonder why???? I haven't used all the features on this printer as of yet but plan to. I do like the 11X 17 paper for printing larger pictures etc.

UNHAPPY PRINTER
Date:February 17, 2013
By PhotoMama

This printer was sold to my husband from an OFFICEMAX employee as a photo printer for my Christmas present. This printer sucks, the colors bleed, some colors on the photos are brighter than others, the people in the photos are discolored on paper but not the computer when you view the photo, and it takes so long and noisy. DISSATISFIED with my first Brother product already.

Disappointed
Date:April 20, 2013
By Toelra

I purchased this all in one becuase it was designed for business but the manual feeder does not work with sheets of labels. The manual feeder often just spits envelopes through without printing on them. The printer is incompatable with Stamps.com so I cannot print postage on envelopes. The display shows "low on ink" well before the ink is low so I have to look at that message constantly until the ink is actually low and in need of replacement. The printer displays a message that there is a paper jam when there is not a paper jam so I need to go through the process of removing the tray, opening the top, and opening the back to reset the printer. Then I have to wait for it to get ready.

Good deal for the price

We are happy with the printer and like the ability to do two sided so easily. It is a bit noisy and rattles, especially when it pulls the paper back in after printing the first side so it can turn it over and print the 2nd side. We don't mind the noise, but it makes the machine sound as if it is made with thin plastic and isn't balanced very well.
We bought ours on sale at Staples. I wouldn't recommend paying the msrp. We bought the printer to replace one that had died.
After buying it our other printer died. We live in a semi-rural area about 40 miles from Staples and this model printer was no longer on sale. Rather than drive back into town we found an HP 5514 printer that does two sided at a local store for less than this Brother. They both make about the same amount of noise.
We like buying most of our computer equipment at Staples because we like the extended warranty and it helped our last Brother to last four years.
I do wish there were not so many different ink cartridge types. It would have been nice to be able to use the unopened ink we had purchased for the old Brother that was past the extended warranty when it died. Also wish ink was not so expensive.

Not a happy camper

I have a print job for a colored photo which I needed eight copies...out of the 8 I had to unjam the paper four times...annoying...annoying...annoying...you have to unplug it to get it to work again...very loud at printing...I mean loud...sounds like it is going to get stuck before it begins...The back cover is very hard to open to unjam the paper..The paper tray is also a pain in the butt...I thought I might be getting something that was going to be better than what I had but am totally dissatisfied...there is no software for printing multiples of photos that I can find..am very disappointed in this printer..

good home printer

Installed easily on the network, and both PC and Mac computers print successfully over the wireless. One main reason we chose this model is because there are no controls on the top, so the cats can sleep on it without reseting it or other annoying surprises. Paper tray works well, a little noisy. We have replaced the starter ink but can't tell yet if the super high efficiency cartridges are as good as they say they are. 11X17 is glitchy: Must be hand fed one page at a time, and typically has an error after four or five pages. Also had a trouble with not printing black, and it took a while to figure out we needed to clean the print heads.

I used this product to do some booklets for an anniversary service at my church and this printer did a better job than I was expecting it to do. I love everything about it and may look into purchasing a second one in the future.

My new Brother Printer
Date:January 5, 2013
By Macdee

This is only a partial review. I have had the Brother printer less than a month, and I have not discovered all the features. I also have a Brother Model 2820 Fax Machine. I keep this fax machine to receive faxes from complementary memberships in medical and scientific journals. I have not set-up the PC-Fax feature on the MFC-J4510DW printer.
Features that I do like are the reverse-setting so all prints print from the last page. I am impressed with the feature that allows you to reduce the colors when printing that saves on the printer ink. Most of all, I have been using the 2-sided print that reduces copy paper. There is a low-key musical sound played when the printer turns-on that is quite pleasant.
I have learned that the copy-paper holder reduces paper jams when the paper tray is full or nearly full. A paper jam is fairly easy to retrieve a page.
Other features are that the lights on the printer dim as time passes and will turn off until a signal to print is activated. I have the printer software installed on two PCs, so if one PC is being serviced, I still have access to the printer.

Potentially great printer for price
Date:January 6, 2013

This printer has many pluses that they just about make up for the few but significant minuses.
In appearance, space foot print and other features this printer is far ahead of its competition at a comparable price (I use the duplex printing a lot, one of the reasons for choosing this printer over others). But in getting the price down too many compromises have been made. The noise when printing is terrrible, but after a time you might get used to it. But it is more difficult to get used to the flimsiness of the paper tray and the resulting frequent paper jams. And the output paper tray is not good for holding more than about 10 sheets, and I oftern print reports of 50 or more pages.
I also have a Brother HL 2280DW monochrome laser printier that looks very basic, just a big black box. How about applying some of the same design features (landscape paper feed, white/black case instead of all black) of the MFC J4510DW to the rest of the Brother printer range? It would really make them stand out over the competition.
... and please do something about the noise and flimsy paper feed
