Best All-in-One EVER

I have had several all-in-ones before but my Brother is by far the best. It just works. What else can you say. From faxing, scanning, printing it is awesome. I even had them buy it for work in our warehouse and they love it. Especially the ability to scan to a specific PC.

Duplexing Jams Constantly
Date:March 20, 2013
By CSCC
The is printer has nice features but unfortunately, my office has concluded that we cannot use the duplexing feature. When duplexing, it jams repeatedly in the rear of the machine, then requires 10 minutes to cool down. Even after allowing the 10 minutes to elapse, it will immediately jam again if we try to print duplex. Sometimes after jamming while duplexing, it will also jam when we try to print single-sided after the original jam occurred.

Great All In One printer, but I could not get the software properly installed on my older PC which has Windows 7 installed. Therefore, I can only use the print functions except the Scan to PDF function. I use a MAC to scan to overcome this problem. The scan work on newer PCs.

one MASSIVE problem
Date:February 23, 2013

i generally find that brother products are well made. when i decided to go laser, this was my first choice.
however, i have found a huge problem with this device and it absolutely decimates my happiness with this product.
the WIFI is only B/G.
why is this a problem? i don't need it to run at N speeds. however, i need it to NOT cause my network to slow down to 54mbps just because it only supports B/G.
unacceptable. this product is too new to only be B/G compatible. considering the miniscule size of the radio in my 2007 laptop which supports N, there is no reason this device should lack this feature.
total fail.

Outstanding Printer
Date:January 21, 2013

My past several monochrome laser printers were from a different manufacturer, and each died well before I thought their practical lifespan should have ended from power supply control board faults. In fact, the last printer died twice as I resurrected it once with a new replacement board I got a local repair shop to install. When it died the 2nd time, I swore I wouldn't buy another printer of that brand, and began looking for alternatives to models from that or another manufacturer so commonly available. It so happened that my home office older-model B&W personal copier had also become dysfunctional so a multifunction machine that was color-capable seemed an ideal choice. The price on the Brother MFC-9970CDW dropped with a nice discount at just the right time, and all the reviews I read indicated it produced very good quality. A few complained a bit about having to replace the stock toner cartridges too quickly, but since most of what I print is B&W I intended to use the high-capacity cartridges for replacements. Those reviews were relevant but less significant in my decision, and I made the purchase through an trusted online retailer from whom I have purchased other high-value components in the past. They provided free, prompt shipping and I have been very pleased with the unit ever since it arrived. The integration into my home office network went smoothly and it has operated very well with excellent quality in all of the prints, copies, scans and faxes over the past 6 weeks. I've now replaced the black cartridge when it ran out after about 1500 pages and will also replace the color cartridges soon with the high-capacity versions (at about the same page count for them according to the onboard diagnostic function that is accessible through a network browser). I'm very happy with the printer and consider it a good purchase for my needs.

Good for a Home Business
Date:January 9, 2013

The printer is bulky, but works well for a home business. It's particularly nice that it has wifi so computers can be used from anywhere in the home. Print quality is excellent. Sometimes there is a delay from when the print is issued until when the printer starts printing. This could be a wifi issue (but not likely given the speed of my network).

Excellent SOHO printer

This printer does everything I expected it to do, and then some. The best part is that it "just works" - we use a combination of Mac, Windows and Linux machines, plus an Android device or two, and they all print flawlessly.
Setup was fairly straightforward. The only challenge I had was that initially I set it up for wireless networking, and any time the router was reset the printer would lose its connection and force me to go through the setup again. I changed to a wired connection, and no problems since. We have a second one in our business office, and it seems happy with wireless. Could be a recent firmware update corrected that issue.
The first "sample" set of toner cartridges yielded about 1,700 total pages. I purchased the "high yield" replacement set and am now beyond 10,000 pages and going strong. I've also scanned hundreds of documents and sent a few dozen faxes.
I knocked off a star for two reasons: first, the paper tray capacity is far too low for a machine of this calibre. Having to pay extra to load more than a couple hundred sheets at a time is silly. Second, we've had troubles trying to feed heavyweight paper, envelopes and the like through the front feeder. The only paper jams experienced have been while feeding non-standard paper this way. Other than that, it's awesome.

A few kinks

Overall, the machine handles the workload. Color scanning great. A few things I don't like:
1. If you have paper in the feeder tray or receiving tray, each page that comes out pushes the other papers out of the machine and onto the floor.
2. The fax function is extremely slow whether you scan and fax or fax straight. My old plain machine was much faster.

Great work printer.

This is an AWESOME business/work printer. Fast, crisp, and quality printing.
The only poor quality of this printer is for photos. It is awful when it comes to printing on photo paper. Pictures come out smudged and to color of people's skin tones is way off. I had to resort to printing pictures on plain paper until I went out and bought a separate photo printer.
This printer also eats toner. I use WAY more toner with this printer than expected. Even on the economy printing mode.

Highly disappointed. Many of the "nice to have"/ "convenience" features are not compatible with a Mac.

not bad but not great

The features on this machine are very nice but the execution of some of them is weak. The scanner renders documents that are out of focus. The paper port in the back restricts where I can locate the machine in my office. This means that the machine takes up a lot of space that it wouldn't have to take up if the port was located somewhere else. Unless I use the port in the back, the machine squishes envelopes and they look horrible. The instruction manual is poor so my attempts at setting up the fax machine have been frustrating and baffling. The color is not correct; not even close to what it should be and so dark its hard to make out images. Brother's fix was to reload all of the drivers but that didn't work. The good points are that it offers a lot of features inexpensively, it makes very clear copies quickly, it prints well (except for the color being off) and its compact.

good machine

the brother mfc-9970cdw is a very good machine. best feature for me is printing on both sides automatically. very good printouts. downside is it uses too much toner - and the toner is not cheap. i guess this is the same for all color lasers. scanning is kind of limited, on my other scanner, you could adjust dpi - haven't found that on this one.
i would recommend this machine if you don't care about toner cost, but then again, toner is expensive for all color laser printers.

good printer

The printer does good copy & printing in both color and B&W.
My complaints are: (1) it is very noisy and can be hard to talk on the phone when printing. (2) the messages for preparing to change the ink are irritating. They start displaying on the screen and computer a month before the ink runs out.

The printer works fine, but I am shocked and deeply disappointed that Brother still does not have a Windows 8 Driver. Effectively, all the printer can do is print and FAX. It cannot scan!! This is a ridiculous issue to have outstanding a full 3 months after the release date of Windows 8 (Brother had to know the Windows 8 spec at least 6 months before W8 was released). How can a product be recommended if it provides only 2/3rds of the functionality advertised?

I have been very pleased with this printer. The printing is clear, the colors are sharp, and it is first-rate as a scanner -- I have scanned dozens of photographs and found it to provide sharp, well-defined images that can be used with good clarity in Powerpoint presentations.

I found this printer to do everything I needed. It is far improved over the MFC-8870DW which I consider to be junk. The wireless connection was flawless and easy to set up. The only negatives I see is poor envelope printing design and the cost of the consumables. How can the cost of consumables be almost the cost of a new printer?

Small office MFC

Does a great job with printing both for quality and speed. Copying and fax are also fine. Has been very reliable for nearly a year. My one complaint is that the toner reads low after far fewer copies than advertised. When you are forced to change, as the toner low warnings are persistent and a bit of a hassle to override, there is clearly plenty left in the cartridge. There is no simple way to tell when the cartridges are getting low and they are very, very expensive to replace.

Best Printer Ever!

This is by far the best printer I have ever owned! Capabilities are great and the prints are awesome! It also costs me so much less than the inkjet printers I have owned in the past. I always stayed away from lasers because of the cartridge costs, but they cost much less than all the cartridges I had to buy for an inkjet when you figure the cost per sheet. Highly recommend this printer for anyone! Brother has hit the ball out of the park with this one!
