8890DW to replace 8440
Date:February 4, 2012
By ewalker3

After having quite a time getting this to work with Windows 7, I finally have it up and working and it seems like a really nice updated version of my venerable mfc 8440 that has served me well for about 8 years (and still works and will be a backup printer). What I am astonished about - for a printer that seems to have covered all the bases: network scan/print/fax and duplexing on all fronts. How on earth could it not have caller ID to show you who is calling? My 8+ year old 8440 does it but this one (seemingly the top of the line does) doesnt show you that you are even getting call until you hearit pick up nor does it show who is calling which is often helpful when receiving a fax.. Because of this I have to give it 4 stars

Bought 4, all junk
Date:January 20, 2012

Both my wife and I have purchased 2 (each, 4 total) MFC 8000-series printers. They appear to be a great value (yeh Costco!) until you realize that they are disposible and need to be replaced every 18 months. The upper mechanisms are plastic junk: ADF (auto feeder dies within a year, top lid handles break off, and paper trays misfeed regularly because of louzy feed mechanisms...). Time to buy 2 more, this time H-P... even at a premium price.

Best Copier / Scanner for Home Office
Date:January 3, 2012

Within the last year I have purchased two MFC-8890DW systems for myself and my daughter.
The wireless function works flawlessly with my PC laptop, my MAC and my IPAD2.
Print quality is excellent even in the toner save mode. The scanning function is outstanding with forwarding to file and email and will handle letter and legal sizes. I recommend this for both home and small office. Above all - it is reliable!

Very Satisfied with this purchase

This is a all around great product. The printer itself is very reliable. I have not had any problems with paper feeding, either from the tray or the feed scanner. The software package that comes with the drivers is also very good. Allowing you to adjust the settings, send faxes and even scan from any computer over the network. Notifications are also sent to all the computers.
In my opinion Brother printing products are much more efficient and reliable than the comparable HP counterparts.

This printer overall works very well! There is the issue of envelope wrinkling. But otherwise we really enjoy the printer!

Overall a very good product-no regrets.
Some of the software could be more user friendly, though.

Love it!

I had a Brother MFC-8640D with the optional NC-9100h network card (both purchased ~2005) and loved it. I'm a relatively light home user. I mostly used the copier and network printer features, about 10 pages per week or so. The few times I needed to fax or scan something, it was right there and worked great! The automatic document feeder and duplex printing were "must" features for me and always worked perfectly. At least with my use, the high-capacity toner cartridges last a couple of years. I loved my MFC-8640D and would still be using it today. Unfortunately a nasty lightning strike took it out! Grrrr! With zero hesitation, I turned to the MFC-8480DN as a replacement. At the last minute, I found a great deal on the MFC-8890DW (reviewed here), and bought it instead. It offers two major features over the 8480DN: built-in Wi-Fi and duplex *scanning/copying*. My old 8640D and the new 8480DN can automatically *print* duplex, and can scan/copy duplex with the caveat that you have to run your originals through the feeder twice (once for the odd pages, then flip the stack over and run it through again for the even pages). For my relatively light use that was fine, but the 8890DW is totally slick -- its feeder does all the duplexing automatically! Just load it up, select your copy options on the keypad, and press Start! Very cool! Thank you, Brother!

Great MFC for the price

I have about 15 of these in various environments at 8 different client sites. They all print, scan & fax well. They seem VERY durable (I've gone thru 5 drums in 3 of them with no real issues). My only complaints are as follows:
1. The PCFaxRX program for having faxes stored on the network does NOT run in Linux and frequently hangs and needs to be restarted.
2. The CC3 software will NOT scan unless the user is an administrator (a real pain in my butt!!!).
3. Warranty work, well let's just say I'd rather have a rear molar removed than have to deal with the Brother Telephone Support Center. Once I got connected up with the service center in my area, all went well but their phone techs are real mind-numbed robots that cannot possibly think for themselves.
I've NOT used the Wireless networking feature and have no opinion on it. ALL my computers connected to it run either Windows XP Professional, Windows 2000 Professional or SuSE Linux 10.x or 11.x. I've not used MAC or Windows 7 drivers with ANY of these MFC's. I've used both the network & USB interfaces and am using one with BOTH at the same time!

Continued problems

As with others, I find envelope wrinkling a problem.
The wireless setup has so far defied my efforts as it threatens other internet capacities of my computer. And each printed or copied page receives a couple of dots on the lest side. On the other hand, printing is great, including the double sided feature.

This is the best performing All-In-One I have ever owned. Has all the features anyone could need and is easy to operate. Duplex printing from the ADF was the feature that really sold me on this product.

Great Performing MFC Machine!

I would strongly recommend this product, as I use it almost every business day, and it feeds copies or faxes very quickly, does not jam, receives and sends very clearly, connects to Wi-Fy operations easily with its built-in Ethernet 8.2. Best MFC machine I have had, strongly recommend.

Best for Mac

We mainly run Macs and this is the most cost effective long term printer you can purchase. Our Brother 8840D is nearly 8 years old and still runs like a charm. This was not a replacement but an upgrade. The ink savings alone will make this a sound investment that pays for itself over time. The fax, copy, and being able to scan over a wireless connection are just icing on the cake!

MFC-8890DW Review

Easy install, excellent performance with the exception that all of my envelopes have multiply hard creases embossed upon then during the printing process. Apparently the envelops are restricted laterally during the printing process and the feed rollers are bearing down with so much pressure that the envelopes are not being allowed to expand laterally during the printing process!

Nice Quality Machine
Date:July 18, 2011
By WhoCaresWhoIAm
This All-in-One was very easy to set up. Quickly recognized on my MacAir. Copy and Print functions are much faster than the machine it replaced. The print quality is very good. I purchased for the ports and wireless capability. I selected Brother because the construction of the unit is much better quality than the brand I replaced is now making.
It is much louder than the machine it replaced although I cannot hear it in other rooms when printing wirelessly.
Drum costs are expensive although I did find a good site that offers remanufactured at a lower cost.
After doing much research, I selected this machine over the other brands because of the case quality and features. I am NOT disappointed.

Been using this machine for about a month now and have found it to be the most user friendly I've ever purchased. It is fast, easy to use and produces great documents. It is a little noisy but all of the pros outweigh that issue by a mile!

GREAT PAPER HANDLING. TERRIFIC MACHINE.
Date:June 27, 2011
By LESM

Purchased this multi-function about 4 months ago so I can't yet comment on its durability. So far, there haven't been any problems.
I added a second paper tray and the maximum memory the machine will hold.
This has been an excellent multi-function. I'm particularly impressed with its paper-handling ability. I can put a mult-page two-sided document in the tray at the top and quickly scan the document in full-duplex mode (where both sides of the document are copied). Copying works the same too.
After scanning, the PaperPort software that comes bundled with the printer, easily handles the storage of the scanned documents.
Everything else works just as it should. I don't use the fax function so I can't comment on that aspect of the machine.

Buy This Printer!
Date:June 26, 2011

The MFC-8890 is the best printer that I have ever owned.
The cost per page is outstanding for this cost point. The features that this printer offers are common in printers that cost thousands more. I use it to print training material that I have scanned and print the PDF file from a thumb drive inserted into the printer.
Did I mention the duplex scanning? WOW!
I purchase high yield OEM replacement cartridges which are not over priced. When I purchase a laser color printer it will be a Brother, or maybe Brother will give me a free MFC9970CDW for my excellent review.
